What to Wear to a Photoshoot
Do's
- The most important thing about the outfit you wear, is the comfortability. Confidence and comfortability will always show on camera; it's important to wear something you feel beautiful in.
- Outfits with low contrasting outfits are always preferred ( If you plan on wearing a white T-shirt, go for lighter piece on the bottom). Long flow dresses are really fun and always photograph really well, no matter the occasion.
- Layers are also encouraged for more dynamic and interesting pictures! Lastly, bring lots of options! Variety is king!
- Dress for the weather
- Solid, muted colors - earth tones, gem tones, beige, and monochrome are always recommended and highly encouraged!
Don'ts
- Stray away from logo's and well known TV characters; these distract from your personality!
- High contrast patterns and bright colors also pull attention from the subject (you). Some neon and bright colors tend to cast onto the skin. Instead, opt. for more muted and earth tone colors.
- Don't leave your outfit choices until the last minute, this should be exciting, not stressful! You want to be able to have movement in your outfits and be able to sit/move with ease.
- Don't wear uncomfortable shoes! Some sessions require walking longer distances or on an unleveled ground. It's also okay to pack the crocs.
- Don't forget to bring a small bag to put your keys/phone/cap and gown in. Having these in your pockets can be distracting and time consuming.
Seniors
Be unique and think outside the box! These pictures should be a showcase of who you are and should reflect your personality. It's also important to make sure the colors you choose compliment your skin tone and hair. Props are always fun and welcomed! Anything that will represent your individuality is highly encouraged. Lastly, don't forget your cap and gown! It may seem like useless tip, but from experience, it happens.
Couples
Coordination is key! Sticking to earth tones, jewel tones, and muted colors are always a safe bet. Layers can help dress up and down an outfit; they can also help create a more dynamic gallery. I also personally love action shots of my couples, so being able to be flexible with movement is important. Lastly, consider wearing something dressed up a bit! It's OK to dress up for a couples photoshoot, and often make more interesting photos.
Families
The best advice for family portraits is to dress as neutral and comfortable as possible. What you wear should represent what kind of family you are. Watches and hairbands on wrists may be distracting for close up's, so taking them off beforehand is helpful, helping to release the leftover watch lines. Patterns and graphics simply don't cooperate well with portraits with multiple people. They can be distracting and pull focus from the families faces.
But Why?
All of these suggestions are given for the same reason: to make sure you are the main focus of the photoshoot, not what you're wearing.
